Practice Focus

Sean focuses his practice on civil and criminal appeals, as well as handling or consulting on trial proceedings raising complex legal issues, in federal and state courts. From 2008 to 2011, he served as a judge on the Colorado Court of Appeals. Previously, Sean had received the U.S. Justice Department’s highest award for his service as a member of the trial team and the government’s lead appellate lawyer in the Oklahoma City bombing prosecutions. Sean argued and won every key appeal in the Oklahoma City bombing cases, including United States v. McVeigh, 153 F.3d 1166 (10th Cir. 1998); United States v. Nichols, 169 F.3d 1255 (10th Cir. 1999); and United States v. Fortier, 180 F.3d 1217 (10th Cir. 1999).

Sean has argued more than 150 appeals in every regional federal court of appeals, in the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, and in state appellate courts outside Colorado. He has supervised, briefed, and consulted on hundreds of additional cases.

Sean has been named a Top Ten Colorado Superlawyer (2017), was profiled in Colorado LawWeek as one of six Top Litigators, and is listed in Best Lawyers in America among other publications). He also maintains an active pro bono practice.
